installation programme

PLAYFUL CITY / August 13-17

8 installations / locations on map

With the theme "Playful City", the 2025 festival invites you to discover the playful side of the urban environment. Play isn’t only for children – it’s a vital part of adult life too, nourishing our bodies, minds, and human relationships. Play in urban space brings freshness to routine, encourages spontaneous encounters, and sparks creativity. Eight artists and collectives from Estonia and beyond will create installations inspired by the theme "Playful City", spread throughout the town.

TAARAPHONE

Location: under Vabadussild bridge (both sides)

August 13, 15.00-20.00

August 14-17, 12.00-20.00
Special event: August 15, 20.00 glassblowing demo

Taaraphone is a musical instrument with components made from recycled glass packaging. The instrument offers a creative pause and connects people on opposite sides of the river through music and play.

From August 13th to 15th, passersby at Vabadussild are invited to bring glass packaging and containers to a collection box located on the Botanical Garden side of the river. On the evening of August 15th, studio kollektiir invites everyone to their mobile glassblowing studio under Vabadussild, where unique vessels will be reblown from premade glass objects gathered with the help of Tartu residents.

Rait Lõhmus is a designer and a craftsman mostly expressing himself through glass. He is
currently exploring ways to reuse and recycle glass packaging, and through his research
developing an author’s technique and concept reblow – a process that involves reheating and reblowing previously used or preformed glass to give it a new shape and meaning.
