The theme of the 2025 festival was "Playful City". Through installations, tours, and events, UIT explored how playfulness shapes our relationship with urban space, encourages people to interact more with one another, and inspires the collective creation of a distinctive urban environment.

The main theme of the 2023 festival "Urban Pauses" focused on the wastelands and voids of Tartu. Transitional and untamed places, which at first glance seem to lack function, but nevertheless are valuable as they are. Together with artists we explored the impact and meaning of urban pauses in the city space.

UIT 2021

The 2021 festival focused on parasitic architecture. While cities are largely planned, many elements seem to appear almost by accident – we don’t always notice them or know how they got there. On closer look, these “urban ticks” latch onto buildings and refuse to let go. Often created by residents themselves, they add new and necessary functions through grassroots action. Both local and international artists explored the city from a parasite’s perspective, seeking new ways of inhabiting spaces shaped by lack or, conversely, excess.

The 2019 festival installation programme “The Putka Project” drew attention to kiosks and stands that were disappearing from the cityscape along with a part of past urban culture. Only a few remained, having stood dormant for decades. Each artist selected a kiosk in Tartu in which to create a site-specific work of art.
