Roland Seer is a multidisciplinary artist who primarily works as an animator, but also has a deep passion for video games and music. He teaches at Tartu Art School and is the head of Tartu Multifilm. His works have been recognized at the Venice Film Festival, the European Film Academy, and animation festivals in Zagreb and Annecy.
On the evening of August 14, under the direction of artist Roland Seer, an installation will take shape in the University Assembly Hall. Co-created with the audience, this piece transforms a space usually reserved for formal ceremonies and concerts into a playful, imaginative environment.
The installation is built around the multiplane, a legendary glass-shelf structure that allowed animators as early as the 1930s to create the illusion of depth from flat images. Using cutout puppets and collage, we blend the present with the past – much like Terry Gilliam did in his iconic Monty Python animations. Through collage, we explore how symbols, archetypes, and memes have shaped us over time. With playful curiosity, we dissolve boundaries and reshape meaning.
This interactive setup invites visitors to experience the grand hall from a fresh perspective – the visuals created through analogue machines generate new semantic and aesthetic layers within the space.
The installation is part of a collaboration with the University of Tartu Art Museum’s exhibition "Signs of Power," which focuses on the Assembly Hall and how this space has transformed under various regimes. Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore the exhibition for free on the same evening.
